National Kidney Foundation Funding Opportunities for Clinical and Basic Research

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has embarked upon a new initiative designed to increase support of clinical research through its Postdoctoral Fellowship, Young Investigator Grant and Clinical Scientist Award programs. This undertaking includes the establishment of a new Study Section which will review Fellowship and Young Investigator Grant proposals involving clinical research. Basic science applications will be reviewed by a separate Study Section which will evaluate all proposals involving basic research for all three funding mechanisms. Research Fellowship Program

The Research Fellowship Program supports talented researchers in the areas of nephrology, urology and transplantation. Annual fellowships are granted to researchers with sponsors at Stanford University, the Universities of California, at San Francisco and Davis, and the VA Hospitals in San Francisco and Palo Alto.

The National Kidney Foundation of Northern California is very pleased to announce the presentation of two new Nephrology Research Fellowships to Dr. Patrick D. Fong of Stanford University and Dr. Wei Yu of the University of California, San Francisco. Both Dr. Fong and Dr. Yu will receive stipends of $40,000 per year over the next two years in support of their vital work.

Dr. Patrick D. Fong graduated from UC San Diego Medical School in 2000 and interned at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is currently a fellow in Nephrology at Stanford University. Dr. Fong's research project will focus on improving methods for removing protein-bound waste chemicals from the body during renal replacement therapies. Ultimately, the results of Dr. Fong's study could lead to improved renal replacement therapy standards for hundreds of thousands of Americans undergoing treatment for kidney failure.

Dr. Wei Yu completed her medical training in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Zhejiang Medical University, China, studied Anatomy and Molecular Cell Biology as a Ph.D. student at Nagoya University, Japan, and through a post-doctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association has been working as a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco under the guidance of Dr. Keith Mostov. Dr. Yu's research project will focus on highly polarized epithelial calls in the kidney and the pathogenesis of kidney diseases where the polarity of these cells is deranged.

Dr. Fong and Dr. Wu will join the five other Research Fellows currently funded through the NKF of NC's research program.
