Joe Belarde's Story
I am a two time kidney transplant recipient.

In 1963 I found out during a physical that I had protein in my urine.

After thirty years my kidney started to fail. In 1992 I went through end stage renal disease. I was on peritoneal dialysis for three months before my daughter donated one of her kidneys to me. I went back to work and resumed all of my activities after two and a half months. In 1994 & 1996 I participated in the National Kidney Foundation Transplant Games, bringing home eight medals, participating in track and field, and biking. After four and a half years I again went through kidney failure. I was on peritoneal dialysis for three and a half years before I received my second kidney transplant. After a year and a half I came down with a kidney virus and lost most of my kidney function. I was put back on the national kidney transplant list, again. I am now a volunteer for California Transplant Donor Network, National Kidney Foundation, and Transplant Recipients International Organization. My main duties are giving out information on organ and tissue donation at health fairs. Also I am a speaker on being a kidney patient who has gone through kidney failure and kidney transplantation.
