Legislative Update: NKF Briefs State Legislators on Chronic Kidney Disease

On August 18, 19 & 20, the NKF provided members of the Latino Legislative Caucus, Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus and Legislative Black Caucus with briefings on the problem of Chronic Kidney Disease in California.

It is estimated that as many as six million Californians have some level of CKD, though most are not aware of their kidney damage and the impact it may be having on their overall health. By educating legislators on the scope of CKD's impact, the Foundation is seeking to build support for a proposed Chronic Kidney Disease Task Force, which would bring together experts to study and provide recommendations for solving the CKD crisis in the state.

"We are extremely grateful to the legislators and staff members who made time for these briefings," said NKF Government Relations Director Robert Griffin, "their interest and commitment to finding solutions to the growing CKD problem is very encouraging."

The Foundation would like to thank PhRMA, Satellite Healthcare, Astellas and Amgen for their support of these educational events and the following legislator's offices for their participation:

Assembly Member Juan Arambula, Speaker Karen Bass, Assembly Member Anna Caballero, Assembly Member Wilmer Amina Carter, Senator Gilbert Cedillo, Assembly Member Joe Coto, Assembly Member Hector De La Torre, Senator Denise Moreno Ducheny, Assembly Member Mike Eng, Assembly Member Felipe Fuentes, Assembly Member Warren Furutani, Assembly Member Ted Lieu, Assembly Member Fiona Ma, Assembly Member Tony Mendoza, Senator Jenny Oropeza, Senator Alex Padilla, Assembly Member Curren Price, Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, Assembly Member Lori Saldaņa, Assembly Member Sandre Swanson and Assembly Member Alberto Torrico.
